Cioppino: The Sauce Recall Incident
Next time when your brother or sister tries their hands at cooking, don’t forget to mention the recipe for preparing Cioppino. You know why? Its because the tasty fish and shellfish stew is very easy to make if you can just lay your hands on good quality fish. Cioppino originates from Italy and is a fish stew made of crab, shrimp, squid, tomatoes, wine sauce, and other fresh vegetables. Good news for all staying in and around bay areas, for example San Francisco Bay Area, not to forget our Asian markets which has good sources for fish.
However, it has been reported that Sea harvest Restaurant Of Carmel was forced to recall the sauce made for Cioppino, which was incidentally being sold at retail in the restaurant. Question arises on the possible botulism contamination, as the state says that the restaurant does not hold required cannery license to produce the Cioppino sauce.
Sea Harvest Restaurant is cooperating with California Department of Public Health to get to the crux of this serious issue, botulism, a serious form of food poisoning. The voluntary recall is meant for all jars of Cioppino sauce, regardless of size or date purchased. Consumers are being notified of not consuming these products, even if they appear to be normal, because of the possible botulism risk. Consumers who bought the affected products should trash them or return them to the store and ask for a refund.
Reports say no illnesses have been found off late. Laboratory reports reveal no positive test results for the pathogen in product sampled. It is important to know the symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans, which include weakness, dizziness, blurred-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing.
